The Federal Government has declared end to strike actions in Nigerian tertiary institutions, assuring students, parents, and stakeholders of uninterrupted academic activities.

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, gave the assurance during the presentation of awards to winners of the Students Venture Capital Grant Initiative in Lagos.

Alausa said the government had resolved longstanding disputes with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) under the 2025 agreement and is close to finalising a deal with the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU).

According to the minister, the agreement signed between the Federal Government and ASUU on January 14, 2026, includes a 40 per cent salary increase for academic staff, improved pension arrangements, and commitments to enhanced university funding.

He dismissed reports of a possible strike by university lecturers as false, stating that all outstanding issues with ASUU have been addressed.

“Our tertiary institutions will continue to remain open for all academic sessions. Please don’t worry about strikes. We’ve also resolved issues with the non-academic staff union, and that agreement will be signed in the coming weeks,” he said.

Alausa added that the new salary structure has already been implemented in most institutions across the country.

“Even without the passage of the 2026 budget, almost 90 to 95 per cent of our tertiary institutions, starting with universities, have started paying the increase without any problem,” he said.

He noted that discussions with the union’s leadership have been concluded, with a formal agreement expected to be signed soon.

Alausa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring improved welfare for tertiary institution staff and sustaining uninterrupted academic calendars.
