Abbas Dismisses Senate Ambition, Eyes Return to House

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, is set to contest for another term representing Zaria Federal Constituency in the upcoming general elections, amid lingering speculation about his political future.

Recent rumours had suggested that the Speaker was considering a move to the Senate to challenge the incumbent lawmaker, Khalid Ibrahim Mustapha of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The speculation sparked conversations within political circles about a possible shift in Abbas’ legislative career.

Further claims indicated that the alleged Senate ambition may have been dropped following the intervention of Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani. The governor was reportedly said to have advised Abbas to retain his seat in the House while discussions continue within the All Progressives Congress (APC) regarding his leadership position.

However, a close aide to the Speaker has firmly denied that Abbas ever expressed interest in contesting for a Senate seat. According to the aide, the Speaker has remained focused on returning to the House of Representatives and has not communicated any intention to pursue a different office.

“The question is whether he ever told anyone he wanted to go to the Senate. To the best of my knowledge, he did not. His priority is to return to the House,” the aide stated, reinforcing the Speaker’s commitment to his current legislative path.

Meanwhile, political developments in Kaduna suggest that former governor Ramadan Yero may emerge as the APC candidate for Kaduna North Senatorial District, reportedly enjoying the backing of Governor Sani and other influential stakeholders in the state.
