England kicked off their World Cup campaign with an impressive victory over Croatia in an entertaining Group L clash in Dallas.
Thomas Tuchel’s men showcased their attacking quality but also revealed defensive vulnerabilities as they eventually outscored a resilient Croatian side to secure all three points.
England took the lead in the 12th minute when Harry Kane converted a penalty at the second attempt after Luka Modric brought down Noni Madueke in the box. Although Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic saved the initial spot-kick, he was judged to have left his line early, leading to a retake that Kane successfully converted.
Croatia responded strongly and drew level in the 36th minute through Martin Baturina, whose powerful strike beat Jordan Pickford despite the goalkeeper getting a hand to the ball.
Kane restored England’s advantage just before halftime, rising highest to head home Declan Rice’s corner. The goal saw the England captain equal Gary Lineker’s record of 10 World Cup goals and marked his 81st goal in 115 appearances for the national team.
However, England’s defensive struggles resurfaced moments before the break as Croatia equalised once again. Petar Musa finished off a well-crafted move by steering Ivan Perisic’s header beyond Pickford.
Jude Bellingham justified his selection with a brilliant run and clinical finish shortly after the restart, putting England back in front and helping the Three Lions regain control of the contest.
Substitute Marcus Rashford sealed the victory five minutes from time with a composed finish, ensuring England began their World Cup journey on a winning note ahead of their next Group L encounter against Ghana in Boston.
