Cristiano Ronaldo delivered a powerful response to his critics after scoring twice in Portugal’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan at the 2026 World Cup.

Moments after finding the net, the veteran forward looked straight into a television camera and shouted, “I’m back! I’m back!”, sending a clear message to those who had questioned his place in the team.

The 41-year-old celebrated more than just a brace. His goals made him the first player in football history to score in six different World Cup tournaments, further cementing his legendary status.

Ronaldo had faced intense scrutiny following Portugal’s disappointing 1-1 draw against DR Congo in their opening Group K match. While stars such as Argentina captain Lionel Messi, France striker Kylian Mbappe, Norway’s Erling Haaland, Brazil winger Vinicius Jr and England skipper Harry Kane had already made headlines with impressive displays, Ronaldo had yet to make his mark.

That changed in spectacular fashion. Just six minutes into the match, he opened the scoring with a brilliant half-volley from Joao Cancelo’s cross. He struck again before halftime, calmly finishing off a perfectly weighted through-ball from Bruno Fernandes.

Ronaldo came close to completing a first-half hat-trick, but a goal-line clearance from Abdukodir Khusanov denied him. Despite Portugal’s dominance after the break and several attempts from his teammates to set him up, the captain was unable to secure the hat-trick he desperately wanted.
