Stephen Eustaquio struck a dramatic stoppage-time winner as co-hosts Canada edged South Africa to secure a historic place in the World Cup last 16 for the first time.

With the match seemingly destined for extra time, Eustaquio fired a brilliant low shot from the edge of the box in the second minute of added time to seal a hard-fought victory in a game that offered few clear-cut chances.

The result continues Canada’s remarkable World Cup campaign. Having lost all six of their previous World Cup matches before this tournament, Jesse Marsch’s side claimed their first-ever finals victory with a 6-0 thrashing of Qatar on June 18 before producing another memorable performance to become the first team to reach the knockout stage.

Canada will now face either the Netherlands or Morocco in the round of 16 in Houston on Saturday, July 4.

Following the final whistle, an emotional Marsch gathered his players and told them, “You are Canadian heroes. The future of the sport in this country is huge because of you.”

South Africa, who advanced as Group A runners-up, struggled to make an impact in Los Angeles, managing just one shot on target and appearing content to play for extra time before Eustaquio’s late strike ended their campaign.

Canada came close on several occasions. Moise Bombito’s header was cleared off the line by Aubrey Modiba, while Marsch’s side also appealed unsuccessfully for a penalty after Richie Laryea went down under a challenge from Khuliso Mudau.

Frustrated by the decision, Marsch attempted to confront the match officials at half-time before Bombito intervened to calm him down.

Jonathan David was denied by a crucial block from Mbekezeli Mbokazi, while substitute Alphonso Davies helped Canada create further opportunities, with both Jonathan David and Promise David going close.

After registering seven shots on target, Canada finally found the breakthrough they deserved in stoppage time, eliminating South Africa and booking a historic place in the knockout stage.
