Haaland Shines as Norway Knock Out Five-Time Champions Brazil

Erling Haaland inspired Norway to a famous 2-1 victory over Brazil with a second-half brace, sending his country into the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in history.

The five-time world champions had the chance to seize control of the contest in the first half but failed to capitalise after Bruno Guimaraes missed from the penalty spot.

Norway remained patient throughout the match despite Haaland being largely subdued by Brazil’s defence for much of the game.

The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 79th minute when Haaland got in front of Gabriel to meet a pinpoint cross from Andreas Schjelderup and fire Norway into the lead.

The Manchester City striker completed his brace in the 90th minute with a superb low strike from outside the penalty area, sealing a memorable victory for the Scandinavian side.

Brazil were awarded another penalty deep into stoppage time after referee Ismail Elfath ruled that Leo Ostigard had elbowed Casemiro inside the box.

Neymar calmly converted the spot-kick, but the late goal proved to be nothing more than a consolation as Brazil exited the tournament before the quarter-finals for the first time since 1990.

Norway will now face either England or co-hosts Mexico in the quarter-finals, with the two teams set to battle for a place in the last eight in their Round of 16 clash in Mexico City.
