The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that seven people lost their lives in a fatal road crash along the Okene-Osara-Lokoja Highway in Kogi State.
The accident occurred when a commercial Siena bus reportedly collided with a stationary heavy-duty truck that was being repaired in Osara. Seven persons died in the crash, while three others sustained injuries of varying severity.
Speaking with journalists in Lokoja on Monday, the Kogi State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Lawal Fagge, disclosed that the Siena bus had departed Auchi in Edo State and was travelling to Abuja with passengers heading to different destinations, including Abaji in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Fagge attributed the crash to a combination of excessive speeding, driver fatigue and a tyre burst, which caused the driver to lose control before crashing into the parked truck.
He explained that six passengers aboard the Siena bus died instantly, while the motor boy of the stationary truck also lost his life. The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue, while the three injured victims were rescued by FRSC officials and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
“The fatal crash occurred along the Okene-Osara-Lokoja Road. The Siena bus travelling from Auchi to Abuja suffered a tyre burst caused by excessive speeding before crashing into a stationary truck undergoing repairs. Six passengers in the bus and the truck’s motor boy died, while three others sustained injuries. Our rescue team responded promptly and evacuated the injured victims to a nearby hospital for medical attention,” Fagge said.
The FRSC commander urged motorists to obey speed limits, ensure their vehicles are in good condition before embarking on trips, stay alert while driving, and exercise extra caution when approaching broken-down or stationary vehicles to help prevent avoidable road accidents.
