World No. 1 Jannik Sinner successfully defended his Wimbledon men’s singles title after defeating Alexander Zverev in a gripping four-set final at the All England Club.
According to the BBC, the Italian rallied from a first-set defeat to beat the German second seed 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (7-2), 6-3, 6-4, securing back-to-back Wimbledon titles and the fifth Grand Slam crown of his career.
Zverev, who claimed his maiden Grand Slam title at the French Open last month, produced a strong and aggressive performance, pushing Sinner throughout an entertaining contest. However, the top seed gradually took control of the match, delivering a composed display to seal victory after three hours and 46 minutes.
“It has been an amazing final once again. It always takes two players,” Sinner said after the match.
“I’m very happy about the win but also about the level we played.”
The final was watched by a distinguished Centre Court audience, including the Prince and Princess of Wales, alongside Hollywood actors Nicole Kidman and Ben Stiller.
Sinner celebrated the victory by collapsing onto the court in delight after claiming one of the longest wins of his career. The triumph also extended his winning streak against Zverev to 10 consecutive matches.
The 23-year-old becomes the 10th man to successfully defend the Wimbledon men’s singles title since the Open Era began in 1968.
Despite the defeat, Zverev praised his opponent’s performance.
“Jannik, I don’t really like you anymore,” he joked during the trophy presentation. “You showed once again why you are the best player in the world.”
With his runner-up finish, Zverev is expected to move above the injured Carlos Alcaraz to No. 2 in the ATP rankings.
