The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has proposed an annual ₦200 levy for students and is considering making proof of payment a requirement for mobilisation into the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

NANS President, Akinteye Babatunde, disclosed this in posts and a video shared on Facebook on Sunday and Monday while explaining the association’s financial challenges.

Babatunde said NANS would work with the NYSC and other relevant agencies to create a system for students to pay the dues directly to the association.

“We will be working with NYSC and one of the criteria to be mobilised for camp is NANS dues receipt,” he said.

He explained that the proposed ₦200 annual payment was not intended to burden students but would help NANS operate independently and support its various structures.

Babatunde said the association had struggled to receive funds from student union governments (SUGs), alleging that many SUGs no longer had full control of the dues collected from students.

“We are considering moving from getting the due to capitation to get it to have a platform where we can get it directly from students,” he said.

He said NANS needed the funds to respond to student complaints and emergencies, adding that the organisation had received thousands of complaints from students.
Babatunde said NANS would amend its laws and develop proposals to provide a formal framework for the direct collection of the dues.

However, he did not state when the proposed system would take effect or provide details on how NANS dues would become a requirement for NYSC mobilisation.

The NYSC has its own statutory eligibility and mobilisation procedures. Any new requirement involving NANS dues would have to be formally approved and established before it could become an official condition for mobilisation.
