Jeremy Jacquet marked his Liverpool debut with a goal as Andoni Iraola’s side concluded their pre-season preparations with a 2-0 victory over Serie A club Como.
The 21-year-old French defender joined Liverpool in a £60 million deal agreed in January, with the transfer officially completed on July 1st.However, a persistent knee injury delayed his debut until the pre-season clash against Cesc Fabregas’ Como.
Jacquet made an impressive start, displaying confidence in possession and making several well-timed challenges to help Liverpool maintain control at the back.
He capped his debut with a goal in the 44th minute, tapping home from Cody Gakpo’s cross to double Liverpool’s advantage.
His introduction to the starting line-up will provide a boost to Liverpool’s defence, which had conceded seven goals in pre-season defeats to Leeds United and Monaco before keeping a clean sheet against Como.
The France Under-21 international was substituted at half-time, with another debutant, Ronald Araujo, taking his place.
Liverpool had taken the lead in the 23rd minute through Gakpo, who finished a well-worked move after good play from Jeremie Frimpong.
The second half was less eventful, with Ryan Gravenberch coming closest to adding a third when he struck the top of the crossbar following a promising move involving Victor Munoz.
Liverpool will now have a week to prepare for the opening game of their Premier League campaign, when they travel to St James’ Park to face Newcastle on Sunday at 16:30 BST.
