Kogi Police Arrest Man for Allegedly Setting Wife Ablaze Over Domestic Dispute

The Kogi State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Jacob Irewa over the alleged attempted killing of his wife, Berida Irewa, at Oworo Estate, Felele, in Lokoja.

According to a statement by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, the incident occurred on Friday, August 14, 2026, at about 8:30 p.m.

The statement said the B Division Surveillance Team in Felele received a distress call and immediately moved to the scene, where officers arrested the suspect.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the incident reportedly followed a domestic dispute after the victim allegedly burnt some of her husband’s clothes, believing they were no longer needed, without seeking his consent.

The suspect was then alleged to have threatened his wife before obtaining petrol from his motorcycle and setting her ablaze.

The victim survived the attack and is currently receiving medical treatment at Honey Gold Hospital in Felele. Her current condition has not been made public.

The police said the suspect admitted to the alleged act in a statement to investigators. The Command has commenced a comprehensive investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and gather evidence for prosecution.

The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, psc, mni, condemned the incident and reiterated the Command’s zero-tolerance policy towards violence, particularly domestic violence.

He urged members of the public to resolve domestic disputes through lawful and peaceful means, warning against actions capable of endangering lives.

The police said the suspect would be charged to court upon completion of investigations, while reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring that perpetrators of violent crimes face justice.
