Nollywood Mourns as Veteran Actor Taiwo Hassan ‘Ogogo’ Dies at 66

Veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker, Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has died at the age of 66 after battling stage-four cancer.

Hassan reportedly died at about 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 23, 2026. His death was confirmed by his daughter, Kira Taiwo, during an emotional social media broadcast.

The actor’s death came days after his family publicly disclosed his health condition and appealed to medical professionals and hospitals for assistance.

His daughters, Lima and Kira Taiwo, had revealed that the actor was battling advanced cancer and that the family was seeking further medical options for his treatment.

Ogogo, who was born in Ilaro, Ogun State, on October 31, 1959, spent more than four decades in the Nigerian film industry. He became a prominent figure in Yoruba-language cinema through his work as an actor, filmmaker and screenwriter.

His death has triggered an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and admirers across the entertainment industry, with actors including Jide Kosoko, Yinka Quadri and Femi Adebayo among those mourning the veteran actor.

The Ogun State Government also described his death as a major loss to the state, Nigeria’s creative industry and the country at large.

Ogogo is scheduled to be buried today, Monday, August 24, in his hometown of Ilaro, Ogun State, according to Islamic rites. A burial prayer was scheduled for 10 a.m., while a lying-in-state ceremony was announced for 11 a.m. at the Pavilion in Ilaro.

The actor’s death marks the loss of one of the longstanding figures whose career helped shape the Yoruba film industry over several decades.
