Bournemouth marked their first-ever European campaign with a memorable 2-1 victory over Real Sociedad in their Europa League opener at the Anoeta Stadium.
A banner in the away section reading, “From -17 to Europe,” highlighted the remarkable journey of the club, which 18 years ago was battling to remain in the Football League after financial difficulties.
The Cherries’ European appearance comes 11 years after their first promotion to the Premier League, with the club now enjoying a level of stability and ambition that has taken them onto the continental stage.
Manager Marco Rose described the victory as a special moment for the club and the 2,000 travelling Bournemouth supporters.
The achievement is particularly significant given the club’s struggles in 2008, when a 10-point deduction following administration contributed to their relegation to League Two.
Bournemouth later accepted a further 17-point deduction for the 2008-09 season as part of the conditions for remaining in the Football League.
Those difficult years now appear distant, with players such as Alex Scott and Rayan showcasing the quality and ambition of the current Bournemouth squad.
Against a Real Sociedad side featuring World Cup-winning forward Mikel Oyarzabal, Bournemouth produced a dominant first-half display, pressing aggressively, winning possession high up the pitch and creating several opportunities.
Sociedad responded strongly after the break, putting the visitors under sustained pressure, but Bournemouth refused to surrender their advantage despite appearing less sharp than they had been in the opening 45 minutes.
Goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic also made crucial saves as the Cherries defended their lead to secure a historic European victory.
Rose admitted the second half required his team to show resilience, while former Bournemouth defender Charlie Daniels described the occasion as a major moment for the club that deserved to be celebrated.
