The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has urged lawmakers to prioritise their legislative responsibilities over political campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Abbas gave the warning on Tuesday in Abuja while addressing members as the House resumed plenary after its annual recess, calling for regular attendance at plenary and committee sittings.

He stressed that lawmakers must not abandon lawmaking and oversight functions for electioneering activities, noting that their constituents elected them to serve a full four-year term.

The Speaker also proposed a focused 100-day legislative programme to accelerate work on pending bills and committee reports before the end of the 10th National Assembly.

He said legislative performance should be measured by the impact of laws, motions, investigations and oversight activities on the lives of Nigerians, rather than merely by the number of bills passed.

Abbas disclosed that the House had received 2,747 bills and passed 363 as of mid-June 2026, adding that lawmakers must use the remaining period to complete outstanding legislative assignments.

He further identified constitutional review, including proposals on state police and reserved seats for women, as priorities for the House.

The Speaker urged lawmakers to put national interest above personal ambitions and party affiliations, insisting that political activities must not undermine their constitutional responsibilities.
