Manchester United’s poor form continued as they suffered a Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid after conceding a goal in the opening minute.
Despite an improved display under head coach Michael Carrick, who made five changes to his starting line-up, United have now gone five matches without a victory.
Atletico took an early lead when Alex Baena raced past Diogo Dalot to meet a long ball before setting up Pablo Barrios, whose effort slipped under Ayden Heaven and into the net.
Bryan Mbeumo missed two clear opportunities to equalise before half-time, while Marcus Rashford failed to connect with Lisandro Martinez’s pass.
United captain Bruno Fernandes came close after the break, lifting Youri Tielemans’ pass over goalkeeper Jan Oblak, but his effort drifted wide.
Atletico also threatened, with Alejandro Grimaldo striking the post from a free-kick before Julian Alvarez wasted another opportunity created by Barrios.
United’s hopes of a comeback suffered a major setback when Leny Yoro was sent off for bringing down substitute Jonathan David while attempting to stop a clear goalscoring opportunity.
Former Everton striker Ademola Lookman sealed Atletico’s victory in the 79th minute, leaving Manchester United as the first English side to suffer defeat in the Champions League this season.
