The Kogi State Government has reaffirmed commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development through efforts to strengthen the state’s capacity to access climate finance.
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo stated this at the opening of the Climate Finance Readiness Assessment Technical Assistance Programme at the Government House in Lokoja.
The Governor, represented by the Deputy Governor, Comrade Joel Salifu, said climate change poses serious challenges to agriculture, water resources, the environment and the livelihoods of the people and it requires practical and collective action.
He noted that the establishment of the Kogi State Climate Change Agency provides a framework for coordinating climate policies and programmes across the state.
Governor Ododo disclosed that efforts are ongoing to develop a state-specific Climate Change Policy and strengthen partnerships with national and international organisations to promote environmental sustainability and attract investment.
He explained that the Climate Finance Readiness Assessment would help identify gaps, strengthen institutions and develop credible projects capable of attracting funding from local and international partners.
The Governor also commended the Partnership for Agile Governance and Climate Engagement for providing the technical assistance at no cost to the state, describing the partnership as an important step towards addressing climate challenges.
He assured that his administration would continue to support policies and initiatives that protect the environment, promote sustainable development and improve the quality of life among the people.
The Commissioner for Environment and Ecological Management, Engr. Joseph Stephen, commended Governor Ododo for his commitment to environmental protection and climate action.
He said the state government is strengthening climate governance through the establishment of the Kogi State Climate Change Agency, the implementation of its climate change policy and collaboration among government ministries and agencies.
The Commissioner explained that the assessment would help identify gaps, improve the state’s readiness to access climate finance and attract investments for climate-related projects.
Earlier, the Director-General of the Kogi State Climate Change Agency, Ajibade Onimisi, said the assessment will help the state identify gaps and improve its chances of accessing climate funds.
He commended Governor Ododo for supporting climate action and environmental sustainability, appreciating partners for supporting the state on the assessment.
Onimisi, urged Ministries Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and other stakeholders to support the exercise and ensure that its recommendations translate into tangible benefits for the people of Kogi State.
