The 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final lineup was completed after Argentina edged Switzerland in a tense extra-time encounter in the sweltering heat of Kansas City.
Julian Alvarez proved to be the hero for the reigning champions, producing a stunning 25-yard curling strike in extra time that beat Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel and secured Argentina’s place in the last four, where they will face England.
The quarter-final clash was overshadowed by a controversial refereeing decision that left Switzerland playing with 10 men for much of the second half despite a spirited defensive display.
Swiss striker Breel Embolo was shown a second yellow card and sent off after a VAR review ruled that he had simulated contact during a challenge involving Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes.
Paredes had initially been booked for the incident, but the referee was advised to review the decision under the mistaken identity protocol. Video replays showed Embolo had exaggerated the contact, prompting the official to overturn Paredes’ booking.
The decision saw Embolo, who had already received an earlier yellow card, dismissed from the match, sparking frustration among the Swiss players and supporters as Argentina held on to book a semi-final showdown with England.
