Spain Edge Argentina in Extra Time to Lift World Cup

Spain were crowned 2026 FIFA World Cup champions after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Argentina following extra time in Sunday’s final at the New York New Jersey Stadium, denying Lionel Messi a second successive World Cup title in what could be his final appearance on football’s biggest stage.

The final lived up to its billing as a tactical battle, with Spain dominating possession and creating the better chances throughout the contest. However, Argentina’s disciplined defensive display and a series of outstanding saves from goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez ensured the match remained goalless at the end of 90 minutes.

Argentina’s task became significantly more difficult after midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off late in regulation, leaving the South Americans to play extra time with ten men. Spain capitalised on the numerical advantage by piling sustained pressure on Lionel Scaloni’s side.

The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 106th minute when substitute Ferran Torres latched onto an assist from Nico Williams before calmly finishing past Martínez to spark wild celebrations among the Spanish supporters. The goal proved decisive as La Roja held firm to secure the historic victory.

Lionel Messi, who inspired Argentina throughout the tournament, struggled to influence the final against Spain’s organised midfield and defence. The 39-year-old captain battled until the closing whistle but was unable to produce the magical moment that had defined so many of his previous World Cup performances.

The triumph hands Spain their second FIFA World Cup title, adding to their 2010 success and reinforcing their status as one of world football’s dominant forces. The victory also caps an extraordinary era under coach Luis de la Fuente following their UEFA Euro 2024 triumph.

For Argentina, the defeat marks a heartbreaking end to an impressive title defence after a memorable campaign that included dramatic knockout victories. Despite falling short in the final, Messi and his teammates leave the tournament having once again demonstrated the resilience and quality that carried them to the championship match.
