Political parties have commenced the upload of candidates’ particulars to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) nomination portal, expressing confidence that they will meet the commission’s deadline for the submission of candidates for the forthcoming elections.
The exercise follows the conclusion of party primaries across the country, with parties moving to finalise the nomination process in line with the timetable released by INEC.
Officials of major political parties said the upload of candidates’ information was progressing smoothly, adding that internal mechanisms had been put in place to address any technical or administrative challenges before the deadline expires.
INEC had earlier opened its dedicated online portal for political parties to upload the personal details and credentials of candidates nominated to contest various elective positions. The commission urged parties to strictly adhere to the submission timeline, stressing that late entries would not be accepted.
Party spokespersons expressed optimism that all required documents would be submitted within the stipulated period, noting that the nomination process was a critical step in preparing for the elections.
Some parties also stated that they had established verification teams to ensure that candidates’ credentials and supporting documents complied with the requirements of the Electoral Act and INEC guidelines before being uploaded to the portal.
Meanwhile, election observers have called on political parties to ensure transparency throughout the nomination process and avoid actions that could lead to disputes or litigation after the submission deadline.
With the deadline fast approaching, attention is now focused on INEC’s review of the submitted nominations before the commission publishes the final list of candidates eligible to participate in the elections.
