President Bola Tinubu has approved the expansion of the Nigerian Army from eight to 12 divisions as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s security.
The President also authorised the recruitment of 28,000 additional personnel to improve the Army’s operational capacity and enhance national defence.
According to a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the expansion is aimed at improving command and control, strengthening border security, protecting critical national infrastructure, and boosting counter-insurgency and internal security operations.
As part of the plan, four new Army divisions will be established in Makurdi, Ilorin, Jalingo, and Benin City, bringing the total number of divisions to 12 nationwide.
The Presidency said the decision builds on the administration’s ongoing investment in the Armed Forces through the acquisition of modern military equipment, improved troop welfare, and continued support for military modernisation.
The implementation will take place in two phases. The first phase, involving the establishment of the 5, 9, and 10 Divisions and the reorganisation of existing formations, is expected to be completed by September 2026. The second phase, which includes the creation of the 83 Division in Benin City, is scheduled for completion by December 2026.
President Tinubu praised the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Ibrahim Shuaibu, and members of the Nigerian Army for their dedication and professionalism. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring the Armed Forces remain well-equipped and motivated to protect Nigeria’s sovereignty and ensure the safety of its citizens.
