Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo has backed a renewed partnership with the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to accelerate the development of the state’s inland waterways, improve water safety, and expand water transportation as a catalyst for economic growth.
Governor Ododo gave the assurance while receiving the Chairman of the NIWA Board of Directors, Barr. Mukhtari Shehu, and the authority’s management team during a courtesy visit to the Governor.
The Governor announced that the state government would immediately constitute a joint committee with NIWA to develop a comprehensive roadmap for sustainable development of inland waterways across Kogi State.
According to him, the roadmap will prioritise the construction and rehabilitation of jetties in riverine communities, improve water transport infrastructure, and create employment opportunities for young people, while positioning the state as a major hub for inland navigation and commerce.
Governor Ododo commended the management of NIWA for the visit and expressed optimism that the renewed partnership would accelerate the development of inland waterways, not only in Kogi State but across the country.
Earlier, Chairman of the NIWA Board of Directors, Barr. Mukhtari Shehu, described Kogi State as one of Nigeria’s most strategically positioned states for inland water transportation because of its extensive network of waterways.
“Kogi State is uniquely blessed with strategic waterways that, if properly developed, can contribute significantly to the prosperity of the state and the nation at large.
“In line with the Blue Economy agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, NIWA remains committed to working closely with your administration to unlock the full potential of these waterways,” he said.
Shehu noted that the Authority would seek the collaboration and support of the Kogi State Government in the development and rehabilitation of jetties and landing sites, dredging and maintenance of navigable channels, promotion of safe water transportation, and enhancement of waterways security and safety.
He assured Governor Ododo of NIWA’s readiness to build a strong partnership with the state government to transform inland waterways into a major driver of sustainable development, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the federal government and vision for the development of Blue Economy in Nigeria.
