Kogi First Lady Advocates Stronger Measures to End Human Exploitation

The Wife of the Kogi State Governor, Hajiya Sefinat Usman Ododo, has called for stronger measures to combat human trafficking, urging governments, security agencies, communities, and families to work together to end the exploitation of vulnerable persons.

In a statement issued on Thursday to commemorate the 2026 World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, Mrs Ododo said this year’s theme, “Trapped Behind the Scam,” reflects the growing threat posed by fraudulent online job offers, fake travel opportunities, and cyber-enabled trafficking networks that prey on unsuspecting victims.

She noted that the digital age has created new avenues for traffickers to deceive and exploit innocent people, particularly young persons seeking better economic opportunities, stressing the need for greater public awareness and vigilance.

The Governor’s wife urged parents and guardians to educate their children on the dangers of deceptive online recruitment schemes and encouraged young people to verify employment and travel offers before taking any steps.

According to her, tackling human trafficking requires a coordinated approach involving government institutions, security agencies, civil society organisations, traditional and religious leaders, as well as members of the public.

She reaffirmed commitment to supporting initiatives that empower women, youths, and disadvantaged groups through education, skills acquisition, and economic empowerment, describing such interventions as critical tools in preventing trafficking and reducing vulnerability.

Mrs Ododo also appealed to citizens to promptly report suspicious activities to relevant authorities, emphasizing that collective vigilance remains key to dismantling trafficking networks and protecting victims.

“As we mark this year’s World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, let us renew our resolve to build a society where every individual is safe, protected, and free from exploitation. Together, we can end human trafficking and restore hope to those at risk,” she said.

The World Day Against Trafficking in Persons is observed annually on July 30 to raise awareness of human trafficking, promote the protection of victims, and encourage coordinated global action against the crime.
