The Kogi State Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) has commenced artificial insemination programme to improve livestock production, and increase income among farmers in the state.

The exercise, which will run from August to November 2026, covers livestock value-chain clusters across the state.

State Project Coordinator, Otaru Abdulkabir, disclosed the first phase of the project targets 1,500 cows and 500 goats, using both conventional and unconventional insemination methods

He said eligible farmers are expected to present three to five healthy female cows or goats for the exercise.

He urged farmers to take advantage of the programme and ensure proper feeding of their animals before and after insemination to improve conception rates.

Mr. Otaru said the initiative is designed to introduce superior genetics that will improve growth, reproductive performance, disease resistance, and overall livestock productivity.

He noted that a Nigerian company has been engaged to provide artificial insemination inputs and technical support, while Kogi L-PRES is constructing three Livestock Improvement and Breeding Centres in each of the senatorial districts, to sustain breed improvement beyond the current intervention.

He further said the programme aligns with the agenda of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for agricultural development in the state, adding that the programme will create more jobs, increase income for farmers, strengthen food security systems and improve the agricultural value chain in the state.
