The Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aliyu Umar Yusuf, will lead members of the Assembly to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Kogi State Broadcasting Corporation, Radio Kogi, in Lokoja.
The Speaker gave the assurance when he received the Director-General of the corporation, Princess Nana Hawa Yusuf, who paid him a courtesy visit.
In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Yabagi Mohammed, Rt. Hon. Umar described radio as a veritable tool for mobilisation, social cohesion and information dissemination.
He also said broadcasting transcended social and geographical barriers, adding that Radio Kogi had, since its establishment, played a significant role in promoting unity among the people.
The Speaker commended the corporation for its consistency in robust coverage of the activities of the Assembly and its lawmakers, noting that such gesture has helped keep the people informed about activities of their elected representatives.
He also praised the administrations of former Governor Yahaya Bello and the Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, for their support for Radio Kogi and the media landscape in general to ensure the growth and development of the media sector in the state.
According to him, the current Assembly had remained committed to supporting legislation that would strengthen the media industry and enhance its operations.
He stressed that freedom of the press remains one of the cardinal objectives of the Assembly, assuring that the legislature would support any amendment or legislation that would assist Radio Kogi to further develop in the state.
Other lawmakers who spoke during the meeting commeded the Director-General of the corporation for her efforts towards ensuring the sustenance and improvement of the operations of Radio Kogi as the voice of the state government.
