Emir of Gumel Dies at 84 After 46-Year Reign

The Emir of Gumel in Jigawa State, Dr Ahmad Muhammad Sani, has died at the age of 84.

The first-class traditional ruler reportedly passed away in Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday, after spending 46 years on the throne.

The Secretary to the Jigawa State Government, Malam Bala Ibrahim, announced the monarch’s death, describing the development as one received by the state with “heavy hearts and profound sorrow.”

According to Ibrahim, the late emir’s 46-year reign was remarkable and was characterised by significant development across the Gumel Emirate and Jigawa State.

He said the monarch would be remembered for his dedication, humility, simplicity and unwavering commitment to the welfare and development of his people.

The SSG also highlighted the late emir’s contributions to the promotion of education and increased school enrolment, improved access to effective healthcare services, as well as the maintenance of peace and stability within the emirate and beyond.

Ibrahim further commended the monarch for his efforts in fostering peaceful relations between communities in the Gumel Emirate and neighbouring communities in the Republic of Niger.

He said the late emir’s numerous contributions had secured him a lasting place in the history of the Gumel Emirate and Jigawa State.
