NECO Releases 2026 SSCE Results as Malpractice Cases Drop by 64.74%

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the results of the 2026 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).

According to the council, a total of 1,496 candidates were found to have been involved in examination malpractice, representing a 64.74 per cent decrease from the 3,878 cases recorded in 2025.

The NECO Registrar, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, disclosed this on Thursday during a press briefing to announce the release of the examination results.

Wushishi said 1,378,048 candidates registered for the 2026 examination, while 1,371,992 candidates eventually sat for the exercise.

He said 804,948 candidates, representing 58.67 per cent, obtained five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics.

The registrar added that 1,126,118 candidates, representing 84.70 per cent, obtained five credits and above irrespective of their performance in English Language and Mathematics.

According to him, the number of candidates involved in examination malpractice dropped significantly from 3,878 in 2025 to 1,496 in 2026.

During the question-and-answer session, Wushishi attributed the reduction partly to the council’s adoption of computer-based examinations, which he said had helped curb malpractice during NECO examinations.

The registrar also dismissed claims linking NECO with so-called “miracle centres,” saying the council operates only one school and does not run or promote such centres.

“We register centres and have criteria for which we register these centres. We don’t know miracle centres because we have only one school and we cannot be associated with miracle centres,” he said.

Wushishi added that where such centres exist, they are either established by state governments or privately owned, stressing that NECO does not support the practice.
