Jobe Bellingham Joins Dortmund in Record Move

Jobe Bellingham has signed with Borussia Dortmund in a landmark transfer from Sunderland worth an initial £27 million. The 19-year-old midfielder, who played a pivotal role in Sunderland’s promotion to the Premier League last season, now takes his talents to Germany with the Bundesliga giants on a five-year deal running until June 2030.

The transfer fee, confirmed as a club record for Sunderland, includes £4.2 million in performance-related add-ons. Bellingham’s 90 appearances and four goals in all competitions since arriving in 2023 showcased his maturity beyond his years, culminating in him being named the Championship’s Young Player of the Season. His departure, though a blow to the Black Cats, reflects his growing stature in European football.

For Dortmund, the signing marks another chapter in their long-term project of nurturing young English talent, a strategy that notably paid dividends with Jobe’s older brother Jude, who made his name at the club before moving to Real Madrid. The younger Bellingham is now expected to play a role in Dortmund’s upcoming Club World Cup campaign, beginning with a group stage match against Fluminense on 17 June.

Jobe’s farewell message to Sunderland fans was filled with gratitude. “I hope that I have made you proud along the way,” he said. “You have made me the player that has reached the heights I find myself at today.” He also pledged to carry the spirit of Wearside with him throughout his career, emphasizing the strong connection he forged with supporters during his time at the Stadium of Light.

Although comparisons with his brother are inevitable, Bellingham has expressed a clear desire to forge his own path. With an Under-21 European Championship ahead and Dortmund vying for silverware on multiple fronts, the teenager’s next chapter promises both high expectations and opportunity. England U21 coach Lee Carsley has confirmed he will allow players like Bellingham to prioritize the Club World Cup if selected.

Dortmund, who secured Champions League qualification by finishing fourth in the Bundesliga, have once again signaled their commitment to developing young stars.
