Tragedy in Ogun: Wandering Elephant Kills Farmer in Ijebu East

A tragic incident struck the rural community of Itasin-Imobi in Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State on Monday, as a wild elephant reportedly killed a local farmer, identified as Musa Kalamu.

Eyewitnesses say the elephant, believed to have strayed from a government-reserved forest, stormed Mr. Kalamu’s farmland and launched a fatal attack. The victim was reportedly rushed to a nearby health facility but was confirmed dead before arrival.

Residents of the area say the elephant has posed a persistent danger for over four years, regularly destroying farmlands, fishing nets, and threatening human lives. A disturbing video circulating online shows Mr. Kalamu’s lifeless body, sparking outrage and calls for urgent government action.

The State Commissioner for Forestry, Taiwo Oludotun, confirmed the incident on July 28, 2025, assuring that the government is actively working to address the situation. The State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, also corroborated the report and confirmed the victim died in transit to the hospital.
