Onana’s Old Trafford Nightmare Ends as Turkish Giants Seal Loan Deal

Manchester United goalkeeper, Andre Onana, is on the verge of sealing a loan move to Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor after a turbulent spell at Old Trafford.

The Cameroonian international, who arrived from Inter Milan in 2023 for £48 million, struggled to replicate his impressive form and failed to meet expectations in the Premier League.

According to reports, Trabzonspor will cover Onana’s full wages and offer performance-based bonuses that could nearly double his Manchester United earnings.

The agreement, however, does not include a transfer fee or an option to make the move permanent, signaling United’s willingness to cut short his time at the club without committing to a sale.

Onana’s brief stint in Manchester has been overshadowed by a string of high-profile mistakes, most notably in United’s shock Carabao Cup exit to League Two side Grimsby Town, where he was culpable for both goals conceded and allowed 12 of 13 penalties past him in the shootout. The poor run of form ultimately pushed him out of new manager Ruben Amorim’s plans.

Despite United’s openness to offers, no club showed interest in a permanent transfer, leaving a loan deal as the only viable option for both parties. The decision underscores the club’s ongoing struggles with finding a reliable first-choice goalkeeper after several failed experiments in recent seasons.

With Onana set to depart, Amorim has turned his attention to Altay Bayindir and deadline-day signing Senne Lammens to battle for the starting spot. Lammens, a highly rated 23-year-old Belgian goalkeeper, joined from Royal Antwerp for £18 million and is expected to compete fiercely for the No.1 role.

However, United fans remain cautious, given the club’s recent poor record with goalkeepers. Onana’s loan exit marks yet another chapter in United’s ongoing search for stability between the sticks, as the team looks to rebuild confidence and consistency in a crucial position.
