Tanker Drivers’ Strike Will Not Cause Fuel Shortage – Dangote Refinery

The Dangote refinery has assured Nigerians that the ongoing strike by fuel tanker drivers will not lead to petrol shortages.

‎Refinery spokesman Anthony Chiejina told AFP that operations were continuing smoothly while talks with the union, government, and company representatives were ongoing.

‎The strike, launched by the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers on Monday, has drawn support from the Nigeria Labour Congress and international labour groups. The union alleges Dangote is hiring drivers on the condition that they do not join a union claims the company strongly denies.

‎Dangote says its plan to deploy thousands of compressed natural gas-powered trucks for fuel distribution has faced delays, sparking tensions with existing tanker operators.

‎Since its commissioning, the 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery has reduced petrol prices for consumers and challenged long-standing players in Nigeria’s oil sector, though monopoly concerns persist.

‎NUPENG president Williams Akporeha insists the strike is about workers’ rights, while Dangote describes the allegations as “cheap blackmail.”

‎For now, the refinery says there is no cause for panic as fuel supply remains uninterrupted.
