Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has unveiled plans for the commencement of civil works at the Zariagi International Airport, confirming that construction will begin in 2026.

The governor made this known during the 2025 AKK Business Development Roadshow and strategic launch of the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline held at the Government House in Lokoja.

Governor Ododo revealed that the airport design phase took the state government eight months to complete and it is currently undergoing review by relevant stakeholders.

Proposed upgrade of the Zariagi Airstrip to an International Airport was conceived and presented to the federal ministry of aviation and aerospace development by the Kogi state government in 2024.
