Gov. Ododo Disburses Over N34m to Victims of Lokoja GSM Village Fire

The Kogi State Government has fulfilled its promise to compensate victims of the GSM Village fire incident in Lokoja by disbursing over N34 million. Deputy Governor Joel Salifu Oyibo presented the cheques on behalf of the state government, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to providing relief to affected residents.

The fire, which occurred on September 12, 2024, devastated the GSM Village at Paparanda, destroying shops and properties worth millions of naira. Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo had visited the site the following day and promptly constituted a committee, led by the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (KOSEMA), to assess the damage and recommend compensation.

Speaking at the cheque presentation ceremony, Deputy Governor Oyibo reiterated the administration’s dedication to supporting Kogites in times of crisis. “We promised to assist the victims, and today, we are here to fulfill that promise. The enumeration process ensured that compensation aligns with the level of loss suffered,” he stated.

The Executive Secretary of KOSEMA, Muktar Atimah, disclosed that the compensation ranged from N500,000 to N5 million, depending on the scale of the victims’ businesses. Those with larger operations, such as phone dealers, received higher payouts compared to repairers. He also announced plans to relocate the GSM Village to enhance safety and prevent future disasters.

Victims expressed gratitude for the government’s swift intervention. Miracle Elom, Secretary of the GSM Village Phone Association, commended the governor for his quick response and pledged to utilize the funds wisely.

Prominent government officials, including the State Commissioner for Water Resources, Engr. Yahaya Farouq, and other dignitaries, were present at the event.
