Jesus Scores Twice as Arsenal Stun Inter at San Siro

Gabriel Jesus admitted he was overcome with emotion after scoring twice as Arsenal defeated Inter Milan 3–1 to secure a place in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League.

The 28-year-old forward was making just his third start since returning in December from an 11-month absence caused by an anterior cruciate ligament injury. Although Jesus has spent four seasons at Arsenal, he says persistent setbacks mean it feels like he has only played “one and a half or two” years.

Since his comeback, the Brazil international has shown glimpses of his best form, including a superb goal in Arsenal’s 4–1 win over Aston Villa last month. However, against Inter, he delivered his most complete performance yet.

“It’s a dream night,” Jesus told Amazon Prime after Arsenal preserved their perfect Champions League record this season, extending it to a club-record seven consecutive victories.

“I’ve always dreamed of being a footballer. As a kid, I watched a lot of Serie A, so to play in this stadium and score here brings tears to my eyes,” he said. “I’ve learned that everything –good or bad–happens for a reason, especially during the 11 months I was out injured.

“Inter are always difficult to play against. We lost here last season, but tonight we played better, controlled the game, even though they are a top side with real attacking quality.”
