Liam Rosenior has enjoyed an impressive start to his tenure as a Premier League manager.
Chelsea’s dramatic comeback victory over West Ham on Saturday marked their third straight league win since the 41-year-old took over from Enzo Maresca at the beginning of January.
Facing one of his toughest challenges so far, Rosenior’s bold half-time substitutions proved decisive, helping the Blues overturn a two-goal deficit to secure a 3–2 win and climb into the top four.
After rotating heavily with seven changes from the side that beat Napoli in the Champions League, Chelsea produced a poor first-half performance that allowed struggling West Ham to take deserved control.
However, three changes at the break shifted the momentum. Substitutes Marc Cucurella and Joao Pedro both scored to bring Chelsea level, before Enzo Fernandez sealed the turnaround with a stoppage-time winner.
Chelsea drew criticism for their lacklustre first-half display, which saw them booed off the pitch and highlighted ongoing concerns about squad quality.
Following the match, Rosenior downplayed the role of his substitutions and instead praised the team’s character and mindset since he arrived.
“My biggest takeaway is the spirit, determination and resilience in this squad – I really value that,” he said. “I’ve emphasized that from day one.
“We haven’t had much time on the training pitch, but we’ve talked a lot about responding positively to setbacks – pressing, energy, intensity. Those qualities showed in the second half, unlike the first. It wasn’t just about the changes.”
Four weeks into his reign, Rosenior’s time in charge has been defined by hard-earned results and smart in-game tactical tweaks.
Former manager Maresca left after tensions with the club’s ownership and after Chelsea dropped a league-high 15 points from winning positions, which often brought scrutiny over his match management.
“Rosenior returned to a more familiar system and lineup for Chelsea – not necessarily their strongest on paper, but one the players understood — a move that now looks inspired given the results”.
