Kane Fires Bayern Past Leipzig Into German Cup Semi-Finals

Harry Kane kept up his prolific run against RB Leipzig as he helped Bayern Munich reach the German Cup semi-finals for the first time in six years.

The striker netted from the penalty spot — his sixth goal in four cup matches — to move to 39 goals in 34 appearances for Bayern, the highest total among players in Europe’s top five leagues. Former Liverpool winger Luis Diaz later added a second to seal the win.

Kane’s penalty also took his goal count against Leipzig to five this season, including a hat-trick earlier in the campaign.

Leipzig put Bayern under early pressure at the Allianz Arena and thought they had taken the lead inside four minutes through Christoph Baumgartner, but VAR ruled the effort out for offside.

Bayern threatened several times before the opener, with Castello Lukeba clearing Kane’s effort off the line after Maarten Vandevoordt made an initial save, while Ridle Baku headed away a dangerous corner from Joshua Kimmich.

The Bundesliga leaders kept pushing forward, but Vandevoordt produced strong saves to deny Aleksandar Pavlovic, Kane and Serge Gnabry.

The breakthrough finally came in the 64th minute when Vandevoordt fouled Josip Stanisic to concede a penalty, which Kane calmly converted. Diaz doubled the advantage four minutes later with his 19th goal of the season, beating Willi Orban to finish from Michael Olise’s pass.
