Six Nigerians, 10 Africans Selected in Historic NBA Draft

Six Nigerians were among 10 African players selected in the 2026 NBA Draft, marking another significant milestone for African basketball and highlighting the continent’s growing influence on the global stage.

The Nigerian contingent accounted for more than half of all African draftees, reflecting the country’s continued emergence as one of the continent’s leading producers of basketball talent. The selections also underscore the impact of grassroots development programmes, international academies, and the increasing number of African players making their mark in elite competitions.

The 10 African players chosen in the draft represent several countries across the continent, with scouts and NBA franchises continuing to invest in Africa’s expanding talent pool.

Basketball analysts have described this year’s draft as one of the strongest for African representation in recent history, noting that the success of African-born and African-descended NBA stars has inspired a new generation of players.

For Nigeria, the latest achievement reinforces its reputation as a basketball powerhouse in Africa. The newly drafted players are expected to begin preparations with their respective NBA franchises ahead of the Summer League, where they will compete for roster spots and opportunities to establish themselves in the league.

The growing presence of African players in the NBA is also expected to boost the sport’s popularity across the continent, while encouraging greater investment in youth development and basketball infrastructure.
