Julian Nagelsmann has resigned as head coach of the German national team following a shock Round of 32 exit at the 2026 World Cup, where Germany fell 3-4 on penalties to Paraguay after a 1-1 draw.

The German Football Association’s leadership strongly suggested his resignation after a three-and-a-half-hour meeting in the aftermath of the defeat. Nagelsmann, 38, had taken charge of Germany in September 2023 and led the nation to the Euro 2024 quarter-finals before this World Cup setback brought his tenure to an abrupt end.

The loss to Paraguay ranks among the tournament’s biggest upsets, given Germany entered ranked 10th in the world while Paraguay sat 41st.

With the coaching position now vacant, attention has swiftly turned to Jürgen Klopp, who has been working in a punditry role during the tournament. Speculation about Klopp’s interest in the role had been building throughout the World Cup , and reports indicate Klopp is ready to take over the national team if approached by the federation.

Klopp has not held a coaching post since leaving Liverpool in 2024, having since taken a role overseeing Red Bull’s global football operations. His current contract reportedly includes a special exit clause covering the Germany job , fueling belief that a move is imminent.

While German outlets have widely reported Klopp’s willingness to step in, the DFB has yet to formally announce his appointment, meaning the switch while considered highly likely is not yet officially confirmed.
