Ukraine has initiated a new military offensive in Russia’s Kursk region, according to a statement released by the Russian Defense Ministry. The assault, which reportedly began on Sunday morning, marks another chapter in the ongoing conflict that has seen both sides wrestle for territorial control.

Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed the Ukrainian attack involved two tanks, a counter-obstacle vehicle, and 12 armored fighting vehicles, targeting Russian positions near the Kursk border. Efforts to neutralize the assault are said to be underway, though the scale of Ukraine’s operation remains unclear.

In response, Andriy Yermak, head of Ukraine’s presidential office, expressed optimism about the operation, suggesting that it delivered a fitting response to Russian aggression. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s counter-disinformation official, Andriy Kovalenko, highlighted the element of surprise in the attack, which reportedly unsettled Russian forces.

The Kursk region has been a flashpoint since Ukraine first launched incursions into Russian territory in August 2024, capturing significant areas before being partially pushed back by Russian forces. Despite months of counteroffensives, Ukraine retains a foothold in the region, underscoring the intensity of the ongoing conflict.

This latest offensive coincides with heightened military activity on both sides. Overnight, Ukraine reported intercepting 61 Russian drones targeting various regions, including Kyiv and Kharkiv, with minimal damage reported.
