Two female students were tragically killed in a road accident in Lokoja on Friday morning, while several others sustained serious injuries. The accident, which occurred around 10 a.m. along the Felele axis, involved a heavily loaded truck that lost control and collided with a commercial tricycle (Keke NAPEP) carrying passengers.
The deceased students were identified as Covenant Omolola Isaac, a Geology student at the Federal University Lokoja, and Abu Taiwo Abimbola, a Science Laboratory and Technology student at Kogi State Polytechnic. Their identification cards were recovered at the scene by emergency responders. The injured victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at Specialist Hospital Lokoja by officers of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC).
This incident has sent shockwaves through the academic community, particularly at Kogi State Polytechnic, where Abimbola was a valued member. Comrade Akor Caleb Kelvin, president of the National Association of Science Laboratory and Technology Students (NASLTS), expressed profound grief in a statement. He described Abimbola as a dedicated and inspiring individual who touched many lives with her kindness and passion for education.
Kelvin announced that the association would organize a tribute and memorial service to honor Abimbola’s life and contributions. “Her legacy of love and excellence will remain in our hearts. We extend our deepest sympathies to her family, friends, and loved ones,” he stated.
Residents of Lokoja have expressed concerns about the recurring accidents along the Felele axis, which is notorious for heavy traffic and poorly maintained roads. They have called on the government to implement stricter traffic control measures and improve road conditions to prevent similar tragedies.
