Oshiomhole Endorses Son’s Qualification for Edo Commissioner Role

Adams Oshiomhole, former governor of Edo State and current senator for Edo North, has expressed confidence in his son, Cyril, qualifying for the position of commissioner for health in the state. During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Oshiomhole clarified that while Cyril’s nomination was made by Governor Monday Okpebholo, it was based on his qualifications, not on the former governor’s influence. He explained that although he initially discouraged his son from pursuing politics, Cyril’s academic background and expertise in public health made him well-suited for the role.

Oshiomhole elaborated on his past decisions to steer Cyril away from politics, revealing that when his son showed interest in running for the House of Representatives, he actively stopped him. Despite his reservations, he accepted that as an adult, Cyril was free to make his own career choices. Oshiomhole also acknowledged the potential criticisms surrounding the appointment but assured that his son’s credentials speak for themselves. Cyril holds a medical degree from Ahmadu Bello University and has further honed his skills with postgraduate studies in the United States, including at Harvard University.

While addressing concerns over nepotism, Oshiomhole emphasized that Cyril’s qualifications were the key factors in his appointment, and not his political connections. He stressed that despite their family ties, Cyril earned the position through his own merit and dedication to public health. Oshiomhole also shared his relief that his son had chosen a path of service that was not influenced by his own political career but instead by a genuine passion for healthcare.

Cyril Oshiomhole was sworn in as Edo State’s commissioner for health on November 19 at the Government House in Benin City. His appointment aligns with Governor Okpebholo’s administration, which continues to prioritize health reforms and improvements for the state’s residents. With his medical background and expertise in public health, Cyril is expected to contribute significantly to the state’s health policies and initiatives.

Oshiomhole proudly noted that despite the political associations, Cyril’s achievements are independent of his influence, and the younger Oshiomhole will continue to build his career in public service based on his own capabilities.
