President Bola Tinubu has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and associates of Prince Doyin Okupe, a veteran politician, strategist, and medical doctor who played a significant role in Nigeria’s political landscape. Okupe’s passing has been described as a great loss to the nation.
Okupe held several key political positions throughout his career, including serving as Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to former President Goodluck Jonathan and Special Assistant on Media to former President Olusegun Obasanjo. He was also a prominent son of Iperu-Remo in Ogun State.
Beyond politics, Okupe made significant contributions to the medical field as the co-founder of the Royal Cross Medical Centre, Lagos, and the publisher of Life Mirror, a health-focused newspaper. His commitment to national development and his vast experience will be deeply missed.
President Tinubu described Okupe as a “bold and articulate advocate for national development” and expressed sadness that his insight was lost at a time when the nation could still benefit from it. The President also condoled with the government and people of Ogun State, particularly the Iperu-Remo community.
Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, also mourned Okupe’s passing, describing it as a profound personal loss. Abiodun reflected on Okupe’s remarkable journey as a committed member of Nigeria’s progressive political family, noting his resilience and principled stance throughout his career.
Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the last general elections, expressed deep sorrow over Okupe’s passing. Obi described Okupe’s passing as a “profound loss” and urged members of the Obidient Movement and other groups to pray for his soul and support his family.
Okupe was the Director-General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign for the 2023 election. He had also served as the National Publicity Secretary of the National Republican Convention and played active roles in the United Nigeria Congress Party, the Peoples Democratic Party, and the Accord Party.
Okupe’s dynamic political journey saw him align with various political parties, including the Labour Party, where he served as the Director-General of Peter Obi’s presidential campaign. Despite his later shift in allegiance to President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Okupe remained a respected figure in Nigeria’s political landscape.
