Rivers Assembly Supports Tinubu’s Emergency Rule

The suspended Rivers State House of Assembly has officially endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the state. The endorsement was made public in a statement signed by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, who explained that the decision stemmed from Governor Siminialayi Fubara’s alleged failure to implement the Supreme Court’s judgment.

According to Amaewhule, the governor’s refusal to comply with the ruling had contributed to the escalating crisis in Rivers State. The speaker further accused Fubara of despotism and tyrannical behavior, which obstructed the assembly’s operations and created a volatile situation.

He stressed that these actions had led to the declaration of a state of emergency, which President Tinubu had implemented to restore order in the state. The emergency declaration resulted in the suspension of the Rivers State House of Assembly, as well as Governor Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.

Although the move was met with strong opposition from critics who viewed it as an attack on democracy, the Rivers State House of Assembly’s endorsement of the emergency rule has shifted the narrative. Amaewhule’s statement confirmed that the assembly would cooperate with the sole administrator appointed by President Tinubu to manage the state’s affairs.

The ongoing crisis in Rivers State has been marked by rising tensions between Governor Fubara and the assembly, leading to this unprecedented intervention. While some see the emergency rule as a necessary measure to address the turmoil, others fear it could set a concerning precedent for the future of democracy in the state.
