New Senate Committee to Monitor Rivers Sole Administrator Inaugurated

The Nigerian Senate has set up an 18-member panel, marking a significant step as the new Senate committee to monitor Rivers Sole Administrator Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.) begins its oversight duties to ensure accountability.

This decision was disclosed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Tuesday’s plenary session as lawmakers reconvened in Abuja.

According to Akpabio, the formation of the committee reflects the Senate’s determination to uphold democratic accountability at the state level, especially in light of growing concerns about the political climate in Rivers.

The committee, which will be chaired by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, has been charged with immediate commencement of its duties to ensure close monitoring of the administrator’s activities.

The Senate President emphasized that the committee’s role is pivotal in safeguarding democratic processes and maintaining a check on executive authority within Rivers State. He added that the composition of the committee could be subject to future adjustments, depending on the outcome of ongoing consultations and political developments in the region.

Other appointed members of the committee include prominent lawmakers such as Senators Adams Oshiomhole, Ireti Kingibe, Simon Lalong, Osita Ngwu, Asuquo Ekpeyong, and Idiat Adebule, among others. The committee cuts across party lines and geopolitical zones, a design Akpabio described as intentional for ensuring impartiality and balance in its oversight responsibilities.

The announcement comes amid lingering tensions in Rivers State over the political structure and recent federal interventions, prompting various stakeholders to call for increased legislative scrutiny. Civil society organizations and political commentators have also weighed in, calling for transparency and urging the federal legislature to remain neutral and objective in its oversight.

Akpabio concluded by reaffirming the Senate’s commitment to promoting democratic values and rule of law in all parts of the country, stressing that the Rivers oversight committee must deliver timely reports and maintain the highest standard of legislative integrity in the discharge of its duties.
