Tinubu to Address National Assembly on June 12

As Nigeria prepares to commemorate its 26th year of uninterrupted democratic governance, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to deliver a keynote address during a special joint session of the National Assembly. The session, scheduled for Thursday, June 12, 2025, will take place at the House of Representatives Chamber in the National Assembly Complex, Abuja.

According to an internal communication from the Clerk of the House, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, the proceedings will begin at 11:00 a.m., with the President expected to arrive by noon. The gathering will be a highlight of this year’s Democracy Day celebrations, which are themed “26 Years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development.”

President Tinubu is slated to serve as the Special Guest of Honour at the joint sitting. His address will reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey since 1999, reaffirm the role of the National Assembly in governance, and outline renewed commitments to national growth and inclusive development.

The session will also feature goodwill messages from former presiding officers of the National Assembly, offering reflections on the legislature’s evolution over the past two and a half decades. Additionally, President Tinubu will confer National Honours on selected lawmakers in recognition of their distinguished contributions to Nigeria’s democratic process.

Speaking on the significance of the event, House spokesman Akintunde Rotimi emphasized the importance of the National Assembly in upholding democratic principles, legislative accountability, and national unity. He urged Nigerians to use the occasion to reflect on democratic progress and strengthen their civic engagement.

The House leadership encouraged citizens across the country to embrace Democracy Day not only as a public holiday but as a moment for national reflection, unity, and recommitment to democratic ideals.
