N-HYPPADEC Bolsters Marine Transport in Kogi with Donation of Boats,Safety Kits

The National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) has strengthened Kogi State’s marine transport infrastructure by donating four fiber glass boat engines and safety equipment to the State Government.

The official handover ceremony was held in Lokoja, where stakeholders emphasized the importance of preparedness in light of anticipated flooding in 2025 in addition to gains in marine transportation facilities.

Receiving the items on behalf of the State Government, the Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Atuluku Levi, described the intervention as timely and aligned with the Ododo-led administration’s drive to make marine transportation safer, more efficient, and more accessible.

He noted that improving waterways infrastructure remains a strategic focus of Governor Usman Ahmed Ododo’s development agenda.

Hon. Atuluku reaffirmed the state’s commitment to modernizing marine transport through improved regulation, public education, and infrastructural investment.

He extended gratitude to N-HYPPADEC and assured that the boats and safety gear would be put to effective and accountable use.

Maritime union leaders present at the event also pledged their support for safe water transport practices.

Kogi State Acting Coordinator of N-HYPPADEC, Mr. Michael Omeiza Ajayi, explained that the donation was part of the Commission’s broader commitment to supporting host communities.

He emphasized the Commission’s goal of alleviating hardship, especially among riverine populations, by facilitating safe water transportation and providing essential safety equipment such as life jackets.

Ajayi underscored the role of the boats in enhancing emergency preparedness and response in view of the 2025 flood forecasts issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET)

He also revealed that additional life jackets had been distributed to local maritime unions and boat operators in high-risk areas, urging strict compliance with safety protocols on waterways.

Beyond the donations, N-HYPPADEC has also commenced awareness campaigns across vulnerable communities, encouraging residents to relocate to upland areas and maintain clear drainage systems to reduce flood impact.

The Commission expressed optimism about sustained collaboration with the Kogi State Government to improve living conditions in riverine areas.
