The Gabriel Abinu Empowerment Foundation has extended support to over 120 selected vulnerable individuals in Lokoja through an empowerment programme held in the Kogi State capital.
The initiative, which took place at the Confluence Fitness Club Football Pitch, involved the distribution of cash gifts and clothing materials to farmers, traders, and other economically disadvantaged members of the community.
The outreach effort was spearheaded by Coach Ambassador Gabriel Abinu, a foreign-based indigene of Kogi State known for his consistent philanthropic contributions the wellbeing of people and communities in the state.
Speaking at the event, Kogi State Commissioner for Water Resources, Engr. Yahaya Farouk, praised the foundation for what he described as a “highly commendable humanitarian gesture.”
He noted that the empowerment programme is a reflection of Coach Abinu’s deep concern for the wellbeing of his people.
“This is truly inspiring, despite living outside Nigeria and having no political affiliation, Coach Abinu continues to show an exceptional sense of responsibility and compassion towards his roots. It’s a challenge to all of us in public service to do more” he said.
The Commissioner recalled that Coach Abinu had previously stepped in during a water crisis in the state, providing critical relief to affected communities in a move that further cemented his commitment to community development in the state.
In his remarks, Coach Gabriel Abinu shared the motivation behind his philanthropic gesture, attributing to his early years growing up in an army barracks where he witnessed acts of kindness that shaped his worldview.
“I was raised in a place where people looked out for each other. That spirit never left me, government cannot do everything. Let us support our communities with the resources God has given us.”
Coach Abinu emphasized that his efforts are not politically driven, but rather rooted in compassion and a deep desire to see his people thrive.
He also encouraged others to lend a hand to vulnerable members of the society, noting that “giving is a blessing, whether or not you are appreciated.”
Several beneficiaries of the programme, many of whom are small-scale farmers and traders, expressed gratitude to the foundation for the gesture.
They described the support as timely and unexpected, noting that prayers of gratitude are being offered across communities in Lokoja for the philanthropist.
