Acting Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Kogi State Specialist Hospital, Lokoja, Dr. Oluseyi Folagbade has pledged improved healthcare service delivery as the facility unveils new medical equipment backed by key reforms aimed at repositioning the hospital for better healthcare outcomes.
He made this known during an exclusive interview on Talk Time, a flagship programme on LugardTV, where he spoke on the hospital’s achievements, ongoing challenges, and strategic plans since his assumption of office in March 2025.
He stated that restoring public confidence and motivating staff remain top priorities under his leadership, adding that improved patient feedback and staff performance are already being recorded.
“As part of our reforms, we have enhanced service delivery, strengthened internal communication, and ensured consistent availability of essential drugs and reagents,” he said.
Dr. Folagbade announced the arrival of new equipment, including two dialysis machines, x-ray digitiser, a 4D ultrasound machine with echo probe, and an ophthalmology operating microscope, which has allowed the hospital to resume cataract and other eye surgeries.
He also introduced the CARE mantra, an acronym for Commitment, Availability, Relationship, and Expertise as a leadership framework to guide staff in providing professional and compassionate care at the hospital.
The CMD disclosed that the hospital has launched a “Staff of the Month” award across all levels of its employees to boost morale and recognize dedication and excellence among personnel.
He commended Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for regular salary payments and leave bonuses, which he said have positively impacted staff motivation and workplace stability.
Dr. Folagbade revealed that a procurement unit has been established to strengthen due process, while a revenue generation and monitoring committee meets monthly to evaluate financial performance and ensure accountability.
He identified brain drain, popularly known as the “Japa” syndrome, as a major challenge, but expressed optimism that the state government’s support for timely replacement of medical staff is helping to fill the gaps.
“We’ve attracted new medical officers, NYSC doctors, and even specialists to the team, which is helping us stabilize operations,” he noted.
The Acting CMD, who previously served as a Consultant Gynaecologist and Head of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department, said his background has prepared him for the current administrative role and enabled a seamless transition into leadership.
He applauded the Ododo-led administration for fostering synergy across key healthcare institutions in the state, including the Primary Healthcare Development Agency, the Hospital Management Board, the Health Insurance Agency, and the College of Health Sciences at Prince Abubakar Audu University, among other health institutions in the state.
Dr. Folagbade further disclosed that plans are underway to introduce entrepreneurship training for medical doctors, in line with Governor Ododo’s vision to build a resilient and dynamic healthcare workforce in Kogi State.
