Lionel Messi scored twice as Argentina defeated Venezuela 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Buenos Aires.
Messi found the net in the 39th and 80th minutes, thrilling more than 80,000 fans at the Mas Monumental stadium. It was an emotional night for the Argentine captain, who played his last home qualifier with his three sons and father watching from the stands.
Argentina had already booked their place at the 2026 World Cup, but the win added momentum as they prepare to defend their title in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
In Montevideo, Uruguay also secured qualification with a 3-0 victory over Peru. Rodrigo Aguirre scored the opener, before Giorgian de Arrascaeta and Federico Vinas wrapped up the win.
The result confirmed Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay among the South American representatives at the finals. It also marked the third time the veteran coach has guided a team to the World Cup.
Colombia sealed their ticket with a comfortable 3-0 win over Bolivia. James Rodriguez struck first, followed by goals from Jhon Cordoba and Juan Fernando Quintero.
Paraguay also qualified after holding Ecuador to a goalless draw in Asunción. With Brazil already through, six South American nations are confirmed, while Venezuela will look to secure a playoff spot in the final round.
