The Nigeria Customs Service Board has approved a new tax-free threshold of $300 for low-value imports, effective from Monday.

The policy commencing from September 8th covers goods imported through express shipments and passenger baggage, exempting items worth $300 or less from import duties and taxes, provided they are not restricted or prohibited.

According to Customs, the initiative aligns with international best practices and is designed to simplify clearance procedures for low-value consignments, enhance e-commerce, and ease trade for travellers.

The exemption is, however, limited to four importations per year under the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023.

Customs spokesperson, Abdullahi Maiwada, cautioned that strict sanctions including forfeiture and arrests would be enforced against anyone attempting to manipulate invoices or evade duty obligations.

To support the transition, the Service also announced plans to establish multi-channel helpdesks to provide guidance, address inquiries, and resolve complaints from stakeholders.
