‎The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has assured Nigerians that the constitutional amendment bill will be given speedy passage, pledging that the 10th National Assembly will succeed where previous assemblies have failed.

‎Abbas gave the assurance on Monday in Abuja during the National Public Hearing on the review of the 1999 Constitution, which brought together lawmakers, government officials, civil society organisations, political parties, and professional groups.

‎He says, the House was determined to conclude the amendment process in a manner that reflects the wishes of Nigerians, noting that priority would be given to bills and proposals addressing pressing national concerns.

‎As Speaker, I pledge that we will take your contributions seriously and consider the bills with diligence, fairness, and urgency,” Abbas says, He added that the House would engage state assemblies respectfully to secure their concurrence and continue to work with the executive and the people to ensure a smooth process.

‎Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who chairs the House Committee on Constitutional Amendment, said the exercise would be participatory and inclusive, with all voices accommodated. He stressed that the House was committed to correcting gaps in the 1999 Constitution to reflect the realities of modern governance.

‎Also at the hearing, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, who represented President Bola Tinubu, commended the House for creating an inclusive platform that engages citizens, civil society, political parties, professional groups, and traditional institutions. He reiterated the administration’s support for democratic reforms, noting that President Tinubu is committed to strengthening institutions and deepening governance.

‎The constitutional review exercise is expected to focus on key issues including devolution of powers, state police, local government autonomy, judicial reforms, and electoral processes.
